I always start the month with ambitious goals to improve the blog. And grow my audience.
I have great intentions.
But after the first week of hustling, I get overloaded. And all my plans blow up in my face. Resulting in no posts for the blog. And no new followers on Twitter.
Once I hit November, I became a new man. I changed my mindset. And gave myself permission to be imperfect. This month it doesn’t matter if I wake up early or stay up late. All that matters is that I get after it every day.
Perfection is the Enemy
I had this image in my head of the perfect day. My perfect day would consist of:
- Waking at 4:00 or 4:30 AM.
- Writing an eloquent blog post
- Scheduling all my Tweets
- Working Day Job from 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM
- Family Time from 6:00-7:30 PM
- Workout from 7:30 – 8:30 PM
- Couple Time after 8:30 PM
Isn’t that a lot?
Yes. It is a lot.
That schedule was too complex for my current lifestyle.
When circumstances would shift my schedule, I had to eliminate things from my to-do list to catch up.
And that was not acceptable.
So, I stopped being so critical of myself. And I quit being concerned with tasks happening at specific times.
Now I run my day like this…
- Day Time: Work the 9-5
- Evening: Family Time
- Late Evening: Workout
- Night: Writing
Doesn’t that look much better?
It is a lot better. And it’s less mentally straining. But the real gift of this new schedule is that it allows me to get into a flow state and finish tasks.
Document. Don’t Create.
The other reason that I ghosted my side hustle was that I over thought content creation. And I undervalued my personal experience.
It took me a while to identify the problem. But I figured it out with the help of GaryVee.
“…Don’t take the time to breathe. Don’t aim for perfect. And whatever you do, keep moving.”
Gary Vaynerchuk, #AskGaryVee: One Entrepreneur’s Take on Leadership, Social Media, and Self-Awareness
This is a volume game. And I don’t have to make it harder.
Less Judgment Equals More Content
Every piece of content I write is an opportunity to connect with my audience. And that is a beautiful thing.
From now on, there will be less judgment and more content. Almost Vested is in growth mode. And I’m doubling down on Twitter.
